One reason his thoughts hold true today is because we as human beings have one specific thing we want to excel at. I personally want to have a science career specifically a doctor. But you can't just think of your self as being a doctor or a farmer. You have to be more then one thing you can't be a fist but you must be the fingers also.
Another reason is because of money and other luxuries. It seems that most americans goals in life are to earn a lot of money but they will be miserable in doing because the job they do is just one thing and they don't open them selves up to other enviorments. Like as a teacher sure they teach a certain subject but they are open to so many more subjects being in the school enviorment and teachers don't make as much money as doctors do. An a Dentist focuses on teeth and that is what they have went to years of college for and not to other things. Do you see what I am saying they can go to college for many years just to learn one thing for money. But making money can shadow your thoughts and make you a machine. I am not saying money isn't important but there are more things out there like ideas friends and other subjects.
